In Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, one of the most sung Christmas carols in the world, the announcement of Jesus’ birth is central. The melody, originally composed by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, has been provided with lyrics in several languages, calling upon people to listen to the glad tidings of the angels. The title of this opening work refers to a line from the English text: Join the triumph of the skies! Cheerful sounds and rhythms on the one hand, and more subdued, longer lines on the other, reflect the joy and wonder of the Christmas celebration. The chorale is included in its entirety in this work, allowing it to be performed with choir and/or congregational singing.
